Technical Data Description
What is a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR)?
A Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) is a advanced wastewater treatment technology that combines two processes:
-
Biological treatment – using microorganisms (activated sludge) to break down organic pollutants and nutrients.
-
Membrane filtration – using porous membranes (typically hollow fiber or flat sheet) to physically separate treated water from the biomass.
In an MBR, the membranes are submerged in the biological reactor or placed in a separate tank. They replace the conventional secondary clarifier used in traditional activated sludge systems.

MBR is a highly efficient, compact technology that produces excellent effluent quality suitable for reuse. While it has higher costs and energy demands compared to conventional methods, the benefits often outweigh the drawbacks in situations with strict discharge standards or water scarcity.
